ABOUT JLA

The Dr. Jeffery Lawrence August (JLA) Bridge Builder's Foundation is an IRS-recognized 501(c)3 non-profit organization. We aim to provide college scholarships to deserving high school seniors from underserved communities and students previously in our mentoring program who seek to attend and graduate from the nation’s best four-year colleges and universities. Each award is intended to cover a significant share of the student's educational expenses—including tuition, living expenses, books, and required fees. Awards vary by individual, based on the cost of tuition and other grants or scholarships they may receive. n addition to financial support, the JLA Bridge Builder's Foundation is committed to fostering academic and athletic enrichment within underserved communities.

Through mentorship, skill development, and access to resources, we aim to empower students to excel both in the classroom and on the field, ensuring a holistic approach to education and personal growth. Our goal is to nurture the next generation of leaders who will create lasting impacts in their communities.

“The Heart Behind the Bridge”

Dr. Jeffery August

Dr. Jeffery L. August is a dedicated mentor and community leader based in San Antonio, Texas, whose work through the JLA Bridge Builders Foundation empowers young men from underserved communities to excel academically, athletically, and personally. In his role as mentor, Dr. August believes in cultivating not just achievement, but character—guiding students through soft-skills training, leadership development, and the confidence to pursue bold futures. In addition to his mentorship work, Dr. August is the author of the soon-to-be-released book entitled The Color of Winning, which tells the compelling true story of the 1982 West Brook High School football team—the first integrated team in Beaumont, Texas, to win a state championship. His book is more than a sports narrative; it’s a celebration of unity, perseverance, and the enduring power of coming together to create change.
